HOUSTON, Texas - Hundreds of thousands of Houston area residents remain without power following severe storms that swept through the region on Friday. As of 3:36 pm Friday, CenterPoint Energy reported that 669,677 customers in Harris County were still without electricity.

Comparison to Hurricane Ike

Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner has drawn comparisons between the current power outages and those experienced during Hurricane Ike in 2008. "This is a significant weather event that is impacting our city in a major way," Turner said. "We are urging residents to remain vigilant and to take all necessary precautions."

Power Restoration Efforts

CenterPoint Energy crews are working to restore power as quickly as possible, but the company has warned that it could take several days for all customers to be back online. Residents are urged to stay far away from any downed power lines and to report any outages to CenterPoint at 713-207-2222.
